And is society okay with sports -- like boxing and MMA -- that clearly cause CTE, as long as the participants aren't affiliated with colleges?I understand your point but regarding sports of any kind, and almost all other activities in life, there are tradeoffs. Is the joy running brings you worth possibly damaging your knees? Is crossing the street too dangerous? Where the line is varies depending on how an individual weighs the probability and severity of the possible consequences vs. the benefits. If you don't enjoy playing soccer you probably won't do it, but if you do you may be willing to risk the possible CTE from heading the ball. I would personally be more worried about serious leg injury, because I think it is more probable. Then again, it doesn't have the severity of consequences.
Although the data we're seeing on CTE disturbs me a lot, I wonder whether people actually will steer their kids away from the sport, much less whether fans will leave in large numbers. The national COVID response has made me rethink whether people are all that concerned with their health or with doing anything to preserve it. We seem to move closer to Idiocracy every day.
I think boxing and MMA are just crazy and I can't understand why anybody would watch them or participate in them. I guess very many others disagree with me.
Until people start changing their wiring so that the best feeling in life is something other than moving a grown man from point A to point B against his will, we’re going to continue seeing heavy participation in CTE causing sports like football, boxing and MMA. I’m far less concerned with leg injuries, though maybe I’m wrong-headed. (See what I did there.)
I’m not sure why included soccer in my prior post. I usually say/write things to make a point, but I don’t think any soccer/CTE connection neatly fits in any argument I’m making.
