I'm pretty much at the point where I think Stanford should drop football. I've been going to games since 1989, and for many years I was a season ticket holder. But for several reasons I think it's just not right for Stanford anymore:
I don't see MTL or Drell dropping football. MTL in particular doesn't have the spine for it. In fact there's probably only one Stanford president or provost in the past 40 years with the requisite spine (ironically, Condi Rice, who had the spine for lots of things but obviously would never support eliminating football).
- CTE. (If I had a son, no way I'd let him play tackle football. Kinda makes it hard to watch others playing).
- NIL. I actually think athletes in revenue sports should get paid, given the revenue they generate, rather than the $ going to coaches' salaries and athletic department budgets. But I'm not interested in watching a pro or semi-pro Stanford team.
- Conference realignment.
- Regression to the low mean of our football team. (Yes, this means I'm a fair-weather fan. Most of us are, to some degree).
