Let's not get carried away by one game against an overmatched opponent. When facing against a top tier team such as South Carolina or UConn with much better defenders, we need all five players on the court to have the ability to score. We've seen it in the past - Sniezek was a great passer and facilitator but she was not willing to make jump shots even when wide open and that allowed opposing teams to sag off of her and provide them more options to double-team someone else.
Thank you. Those good offensive players look human if Lepolo’s defenders are in their driving lanes (Haley) or double teaming in the post (Cam, Kiki). Stanford has tried to play 4 on 5 on offense many many many many times in the past (honestly it’s like groundhogs day), and you don’t win the big trophy at the end that way. It’s simply a spacing issue. We’ve had some of the very best offensive talent in the post (Nneka for sure and Chiney had to score efficiently against triple teams) but in the end, they fell short time and time again because there was nothing they could do with the cards dealt to them on the perimeter. Haley and Cam haven’t had to consistently face those odds (double or triple teams) (esp. in 2021) because they had willing shooters at every position (even Anna’s %s we’re great during that 2021 run breaking the NCAA 3-point tourney record as a team and still barely beating Arizona by 1 point). Had Anna been able to replicate those percentages in 2022, they’d be the two-time defending champions. The margin for victory is paper thin even with 40% 3-point shooters surrounding your two All-Americans. So what is the probability that a non-shooter makes things better? I don’t have to get use to anyone and I don’t have to reserve judgment from a story I’ve seen play out a lot over the years. I simply know how the story ends and I’d rather focus on rewrites. I certainly don’t have to accept a 70s style pure point guard that Tara seems to love (like Marta) in 2022 when there are winning skill sets on the bench in Bosgana and Nivar (both of whom are better ballhandlers than Lacie and Anna and both can learn the point). Thankfully, WBB has evolved. Stanford has the championship blueprint. Follow that.
