If Haase is fired say next year or  in two years, who's to say Madsen wouldn't leave Cal and take the Stanford job then?  Coaching contracts really mean nothing and unless he's somehow built them into a powerhouse by then, I think he'd leave Cal for Stanford. Granted, I wish he was the head coach now and Haase was long gone.

Oftentimes there is a buyout involved. There are those that would argue that is all that saved Wilcox, he was too costly to fire. I would imagine Madsen got at least a 5 year contract, but he may have also have accepted a relatively large buyout in exchange for "guaranteed" money. If Knowlton was competent, I would bet heavily on it, because the scenario of him leaving for Stanford is an obvious "risk". Given that he apparently isn't competent, Madsen may have a "cheap" buyout. That may clearly affect what is possible in a year or two.
