I always think that, whenever I read about a student-athlete (I realize that's an unfashionable term, but I am unrepentantly unfashionable) that has strong grades and test scores, "why didn't they go to Stanford?" Or at least Cal...

I retain two vivid memories of UO, from a college selection trip my son and I took up to UW and UO by car in 2003. First, it was truly a beautiful campus. Second, the bookstore was one of the most pathetic I've ever seen on a university campus. Pitifully thin selection of (non-text) books for purchase. That spoke volumes to me. For the sake of the students, I hope the main university library is a lot better in its scholarly holdings.
