As egregious and stupid as this foul was, it was bookended by two plays that were similarly awful if you are a Louisville fan. The Cardinals, after a time out, decided to try a Hail Mary on fourth-and-ten with 11 seconds left in regulation, which give Stanford the ball with five seconds left.

I don’t think the fourth and 11 with 10 seconds was egregious, though they probably should have thrown it underneath to try to pick up a first down and kick the field goal.  The way I look at it is that 4th and 11 with 10 seconds from the opponents 45 was a better position that 1st and 10 with 5 seconds left from your own 45.  And if you are Louisville, don’t you want a chance to end it in regulation?  The penalties were inexcusable, but I don’t think the decision to go for it was.

Agree.  Not surprised they went for it.  I was expecting something about 10 yards from LOS in the middle of field.

Don't forget they took their last time out before the play, and there were only about 11 or 12 seconds left. If they had gone over the middle of the field, I doubt they would have been able to get their kicking team on the field even with the clock stopping to reset the chains.
