Stanford is hiring new (Republican)lobbyists to try to salvage the hundreds of millions of Federal funding that are at risk. I don’t think they are going to be spending big money on a football coach in this time of financial crisis. It would be a terrible look as well as financially imprudent.
Seems like Andrew is leaving that door distinctly open, yes, which is good and necessary negotiating leverage with any replacement candidates (don't put a gun to your own head to make a hire on a deadline). I think it's all dependent on the caliber of pool they can pull together/gain interest from.
As to the financial perspective and climate: football coach salaries have been a bone of contention since time immemorial. Winning solves all known problems.
