I thought the head coaching position is endowed? How would a risk of a loss of federal funding affect that?
The bright side is that Stanford is competing with no one for a head coach. The downside is that any coach who would jump programs, especially laterally, during spring football with the portal open in a couple of weeks is kind of a bum. Also, expect most of the players to leave this spring unless they love the interim or have no other options.
I'd go the interim or promotion route. Find a Peterson or talking head or former standup coach who agrees to clearly take a one season, steady the ship job while they search for someone more permanent. Or take a flyer on a cheap assistant and either that person wows or is disposable.
Much like UVA in hoops when Bennett suddenly retired. Sanchez took over, had a horrible season, and now they have Odom the Younger, who seems pretty promising. Next year was going to suck anyway. Tear the program down to the studs and build it back up. They really need another Harbaugh, regardless of his foibles.
Another reason to go temporary/interim is to let a new AD come into the situation with control over THE major hire.
