Stanford's 1st regular season ACC win since Sept 27 of last year. Since the start of ACC play last year, Stanford has now won at Clemson, at Notre Dame, at Virginia and at Syracuse. Road warriors!
You can’t fault the effort, but man they are making it hard on themselves again this year.
Bad
- giving up early goals is the plague again this year. I think that’s 4 of the last 5 games.
- the first half is often rough sledding with too many high balls to nowhere in particular, and they aren’t great at winning those 50/50 balls. The result is only a 6:5 goal advantage in half one and an 10:2 advantage in half 2.
- too much loose change in or near the box - both goals for Syracuse came when Stanford couldn’t clean up a ball in the box.
Good
- the offense is clearly much better - last year an early opponent goal resulted in a loss or maybe a tie. This year they have won 3 and lost only one of those. Can’t keep doing this as the ACC unfolds though.
- I need to add Islam to the Frosh/game changer list even though he isn’t a Frosh. He is very interesting. He doesn’t pop out in the game; he isn’t big, fast or overwhelmingly tricky with the ball. He just seems to get to the right spots and finish - Chris Wondolowski like. Leads the team with 4 goals.
- can’t ever fault their effort. Came back twice in this one.
- it isn’t all clicking yet for Tomo - offside twice on goals in this game for example - but he looks close.
