I think it is reasonable to speculate that Stanford does not win this game with Okpara on the floor. The offensive efficiency was such a joy to watch without Okpara becoming a black hole with the ball. The spacing was better too. The matchups against the UNC bigs would not have been in Okpara's favor. Stanford was helped by UNC's mediocre defense, but you still have to make the shots. Stanford impressively shot 57% on 3s and 57% on 2s.
One of Okorie's underrated strengths is his strength. He does not have a skinny freshman body that needs to beef up. He is a strong player who has a great sense of how to use that strength on the drive and then to finish. I don't think we have had a player of any size who can finish around the rim like Okorie.
Defenses will continue to develop schemes to slow down or stop him. That will almost certainly involve multiple defenders. So Okorie's development challenge is to help his teammates take advantage of overplays by getting them the ball where they can score as he did last night.
Stanford only has 6 more home games this season, including this Saturday vs. Duke and next Saturday vs. Cal. That means 6 more chances to see Okorie at home. Get out to Maples if you can.
