I’d love for someone to actually analyze how much using a time out to stop bad momentum or diagram a play helps. My guess is much less than conventional wisdom holds. The fourth quarter is a good example; I don’t think Paye took a timeout before we cut the lead from 10 to 3, did she?
On the other hand, time outs to extend the game at the end (eg to advance the ball to midcourt) probably offer a tangible benefit by saving a few seconds from the clock. The thing is they probably only work in a narrow range of scores.
