On the other hand, time outs to extend the game at the end (eg to advance the ball to midcourt) probably offer a tangible benefit by saving a few seconds from the clock. The thing is they probably only work in a narrow range of scores.

Worst refs ever? I did think it was interesting that the UVA coach challenged the OOB call, and the refs looked at the video for 3+ minutes. Even if you don't get charged a timeout, that's a much longer break than a traditional timeout. Win-win for UVA! Then they got together to discuss it for quite some time, too. It looked obvious to me from the replay that the ball went out on the UVA player, but if they're having so much trouble deciding, isn't the call on the court supposed to stand?
