I found it interesting that the Steelers had so many players with four Super Bowl rings, the Niners, a decade later, had about a quarter as many, and then two decades after that, only Brady managed to win four with the Patriots. I think it says something about team stability over the ages. It also says something about Brady, that he could win Super Bowls with the entire team turning over around him.

A couple stats to consider:
The Niners had 16 consecutive years of double digit wins.
The Steelers had 9 consecutive winning seasons.
Walsh built his program around sustained success by turning over the roster. His mantra, “better to move them out a year too early rather than a year too late” says it all.
Pittsburgh was like a shooting star, a short burst that was loaded with tons of power.
A very short and simplistic look but one that may summarize why there is such a difference between the two franchises in their respective golden eras.
Along those lines, Chuck Noll used to claim that he was all set to draft Dan Marino from local university Pittsburgh. He claims he went and asked Terry Bradshaw how much he had left in the tank, and Bradshaw supposedly told Noll he was good to go for another season. Noll drafted an NT #21 overall in 1983 who had a six-game NFL career. Marino was drafted #27 overall (one spot ahead of fellow HoFer Darrell Green) and Bradshaw played one more game and called it quits.
If Noll had any foresight at all, he would have drafted Marino. You don't draft a QB to start him immediately, he needs a year or three to acclimatize to the NFL game.
BTW, the 49ers first draft choice that year was Roger Craig in the second round...and recent hall of fame member. Seven first round draft picks that year were Hall of Fame members, including Elway, Marino, Green, Jim Kelly, Jimbo Covert, Eric Dickerson and Jimbo Covert. Craig was selected in the second round, and Richard Dent was an 8th round selection out of Tennessee State...and Hall of Famer.
