As a Stanford freshman, I was a Stanford field hockey goalkeeper who carried the Olympic torch in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Games. I had never seen the luge before, watched it, stayed for a clinic, become obsessed, bought a sled, trained in Germany, spoke fluent German and made the 1984 American Olympic team, ultimately competing in three Olympics. At one point, I literally slept on the floor of the U. S. Luge Association while I learned the sport.
