This post made me think; I don't think anybody thought Martin was soft at Stanford, but people didn't talk about him like they did DeCastro and his "mean streak." From my limited ability to judge offensive linemen, I thought they were both excellent by any technical or athletic measure. But damn if every article about DeCastro didn't talk about his demeanor.
You read Trotter's article and that just emphasizes it. This macho, adolescent culture is really coming under a harsh light not only on this front, but on the concussion issue as well.
The NFL is going to have to change or it won't survive.
