I don't consider Snowden to be a hero either.  He had an agreement to not betray the US and reveal information, and he broke that agreement.  He is a traitor, and I am a person who doesn't approve of government spying.

When one takes a position with the federal government, they take an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." There's a lot more involved than just keeping secrets and following orders.
