Having 7 NFL players on defense (minimum) with a lot of experience allows MSU to do a lot of different things that most offenses have not seen.
Who has said this? Any analysis of MSU's defense that's more sophisticated than "OMG POINTS PER GAME" thinks they're not the best defense this year. FEI has them 3rd (behind VT and us), F+ has them 3rd behind VT and FSU (with us 5th), and ESPN's FPI has them 7th (and us 8th).
I don't think there's any case whatsoever to be made that MSU is the best defense of the past decade. It'd be tough enough to make the case that they're the best this year.
