I did a search on "Stanford" and read mostly those parts.  In Martin's weighing the pros and cons about doing something, this stood out and is both sad and NOT TRUE:

"my legacy at Stanford will be tarnished"

Martin's legacy at Stanford stands on its own.  If anything, my admiration for Martin went up.  It takes bravery to stand up to not just bullies but also the organizations that foster and enable that kind of behavior.  He did himself, the NFL, and the broader issue of bullying a favor by tapping out.
