I always thought one of Harbaugh's biggest strengths when he came to Stanford was the great assistants he hired, guys with impressive coaching résumés. I thought it was a great sign that they were willing to work for him. Shaw seems to be continuing to keep a strong staff despite the number of coaches who have gone on to bigger gigs.

Before we get too high and mighty, recall that Harbaugh called time out with 6 seconds left losing 45-16 to USC.  Grant it, we had possession of the ball, and wound up scoring to make the game 45-23, but still, we could have just run into the line and gotten out of there.  Dykes was sending a message to his team.

Before we get too high and mighty, recall that Harbaugh called time out with 6 seconds left losing 45-16 to USC.  Grant it, we had possession of the ball, and wound up scoring to make the game 45-23, but still, we could have just run into the line and gotten out of there.  Dykes was sending a message to his team.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if they finish 6-6, lose their bowl game, and it wouldn't surprise me if Yikes either leaves on his own or gets fired.  Without Goff next year they are gonna suck once again.  And it makes me smile  8)

Hovering around the top 25 in a tough pac12 is not unthinkable. They should come right up there if they win their next, and I'd say they have a decent chance on any team that doesn't have a dominant line presence (hopefully us).
ucla and Mora needed this game desperately and they played like it at the Rose Bowl, it shouldn't be a brobdingnagian surprise.

This game points to pac12 parity with a hint of Stanford being a standard deviation away (if it weren't for that NW game, the hint would not be nearly that subtle).

Cal's schedule is rough the rest of the way outside of Oregon State which would get them bowl eligible.  Other games are U*S*C, at Oregon, at Stanford, and Arizona State.  Final game against ASU will be big for getting a better bowl game.  I won't put my money on them getting to 7 wins.

I'm trying to look at the parallels between Yikes and Harbaugh. On paper, is Ca'l behind where Stanford was in Harbaugh's third year? We were 8-4 regular season and I bet Ca'l gets to that, if not 7-5. It's reasonable to say that despite similar records, Harbaugh and Stanford had some real quality wins in '09 such as against SC and Oregon, which Ca'l lacks. But we also fell on our faces a couple of times against Wake Forest, Arizona and C'al. And the Achilles heel for Stanford that year was also our defense. Perhaps it takes a little longer to rebuild on that side of the ball.

One thing I find amusing about C'al fans' love of Goff and disdain for Hogan is that they credit all of Hogan's wins and stats to a great team around him. Meanwhile, how many fewer yards and TDs would Goff have if he wasn't throwing it to the like of Lawler and Treggs. Those guys turn bad throws into TDs.

Did you see Cal's OL last night?  Is Anyone predicting that Cal will make it to a New Years six bowl next year?  Yeah, me neither.

It would be tough to find a worse OL in all the Power 5 conferences than what Ca.l is throwing out there.  But I personally think the scheme is as much to blame as the personnel per se.  Their OL never get in a three-point stance and retreat on virtually every snap.  They never get to fire off and hit anyone.  Stanford OL must get the willies watching Ca.l on offense.  I've watched Baylor, and though their OL get in two point stances, they also do in fact get in three point stances as well.  Being in a two point stances all the time prevents OL from being aggressive.  They try to create running lanes with wide line splits, but by retreating on every snap, it's easy for quick DL to penetrate the gaps.

I don't mind the spread offensive philosophy, but I can't stand the Ca.l offensive line technique.
