I think the most the University can do is kick them off the team and revoke their scholarships. They can then transfer and IIRC in these circumstances they would not have to sit out a season. If that were the worst thing that could happen to me, and I felt as strongly as these guys appear to feel, I wouldn't hesitate to be right there with them. I might not be able to play football for or graduate from Missouri, but I'd be confident that I could do both somewhere else.

If all you think of this situation is that it's political activism I feel sorry for you. This is way more than that. This is equivalent to a hostile work environment with an administration that doesn't appear to be doing anything about it. If I thought they were worthy of a scholarship based on their on-field performance I'd offer one in a heartbeat.

If it was inside a dorm then it was almost certainly either someone affiliated with the university or someone brought in my someone affiliated with the university. Although maybe Mizzou's security is ludicrously lax and anyone can just walk into a dorm at 2AM.

See my Asia Kim reference above. I think you seriously misremember the state of dorm security at Stanford.
Sure it's not impossible to get into a dorm, but you have to be let in by someone at some point. Which is doable, but gets hard if no one knows you and it's late at night. Do you think it's anything other than highly unlikely that it was done by someone with no university affiliation?

Indeed if anything this shows society's somewhat poor weighting of what opinions matter -- fewer people were paying attention before the football team got involved. The Washington Post has written about it but not, say, Vox, who I'd expect to be all over it. I'm not sure why the Jewish community is not more concerned with the Nazi symbol than the black community. Even if it was a student that placed the Nazi symbol and it was students that used the N word, how could the University President have stopped that? That's where choosing your battles carefully comes into play. It's understandable to get involved in political actions to try to change the tone and culture of the University environment. But to hold hostage the football program until the President is removed seems to be overplaying your cards big time.

I don't know enough about this incident beyond what has been written publicly to comment, but when you have a series of racist incidents there are ways that a University President can respond that shows concern for everyone in the student body, and there are ways that show that he (or she) is more interested in hobnobbing with donors and really couldn't be bothered to address the issue. Though I don't know what Wolfe has or has not done in this case, it is clear that it has left a number of people very upset, not just the football team.

Dorm security was absolutely lax in my day, but based on my experience with my son at Marquette, it's not that way today.
At Marquette, every dorm entrance is staffed and you cannot get past there unless you have a student ID or someone with a student ID meets you at the desk. Maybe that's a function of Marquette being an urban campus, but I think that something that happens inside a dorm room is either done by someone with access or someone deliberately let in by a person with access.
