The guy is a hack and stirring the pot.
I was wondering why somebody would say something so stupid. After reading a longer interview with King, I agree with BrewHawk that the Daily writer was stirring the pot.
First, the link to the article reads
http://www.stanforddaily.com/2015/12/29/...sh-garnett while the actual headline reads, "Iowa cornerback Desmond King expects to be able to take out Josh Garnett". So I'm guessing somebody got a little overzealous with the original title of the article and included the word "pancake" until somebody else realized that that word never appeared in the interview.
The article I found with more of that interview is at
https://iowa.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1840315. In that interview King is very complimentary of Stanford . There's no full video of the interview, so impossible to say exactly what was said, but in that article, The Garnett part comes up here:
Q. So what is your strategy? If you see Josh Garnett pulling against you, you're probably not going to take him on size-wise, right?
DESMOND KING: I took somebody out that size before, my freshman year against LSU, I think his name was Landon Collins, one of the big guards, big tackles. He did the same thing, and I knocked him over. We both fell out, if you really want to know. We both fell out on the ground, but I eliminated him out of the play.
I'm looking forward to the same thing. I know he's a big guy, and he's very (indiscernible), as well. He's a hard-nosed tackle, and he can make something happen.
So I think the key is what is King referring to when he says, "I'm looking forward to the same thing." When King says, "the same thing," if he was referring to the challenge of a big lineman pulling against him, that's not trash-talking. If he meant, "taking out Josh Garnett," then that's bulletin board material. But at least based on this interview transcript, it sure seems ambiguous, and if it's ambiguous, it's irresponsible of the Daily article to quote King as saying,
"He did the same thing, and I knocked him over
Im looking forward to the same thing [against Garnett].
But no matter what, I absolutely loved Garnett's response. Btw, what I found most interesting about that article was this exchange:
Q. You said that the way they kind of operate their offense, those calls in the huddle, and they'll go up and check at the line of scrimmage. Have you seen any keys on film on what [Hogan] can do in certain situations?
DESMOND KING: I know I picked out one, but I'm not sure if that's an actual check. So I'm going to be looking for it in the game, and if it is, then I'll know exactly what's going on.
Q. Don't want to share it, I'm assuming?
DESMOND KING: No.
So that's interesting and a little ominous. I remember the announcers last year pointing out that Barry J was telegraphing certain plays (something like scanning the line only on run plays?), and this year, Harris & Meeks recognized that WSU were about to run a screen play which enabled Meeks to jump the route and intercept it. Sure hope King hasn't seen something.
