@StanfordAlumni has now deleted its ill-advised tweet admonishing the band for going "too far" and promising a much tighter leash from here on out. Gracias to Yvonne, robbie, and anyone else who tweeted your outrage (I'm not sure how many other tweets they received before deletion).

Having been at the game, the Iowa fans were upset by the "Pink Locker Room" pre-game show and were not ready to listen to or try to understand the approach of a scatter band hailing from Stanford. They were upset and taunting 2 minutes into the pre-show, claiming "band superiority" (whatever that is). Needless to say, the taunting and comments ceased 11 seconds into the game. As for half time, we could have played "God Bless America" and they still would have booed given the dismantling that took place on the field. Â
My suggestion to the band is that they distribute leaflets (paper and internet) to future non-Pac12 competitors to inform them of their slap-stick approach with some hints and tips along the lines of: Stanford is known as "The Farm" and X number of students matriculate from Iowa, to try to soften the blow.   That being said..."Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore" and if they can't take a joke.... (that's a JOKE)!
As for the LSJUMB, we had 3 band members come over for dinner before they left for Pasadena. All three are freshman with my son and they were all great, very bright kids/students with varying degrees of musical talent and all enjoy the band immensely! Only one of them was from CA. I think the culture is changing somewhat given this year's probation and that's probably a good thing, to a point. Maybe the pendulum had swung a bit too far, but as others have noted, the script was approved by multiple parties including Iowa.  The scripts are clearly less racy now, given the AD approval, but it needs to provide enough fun to keep the kids engaged. It's Stanford, and most undergrad alums know that a "traditional, boring" marching band would not be very popular and would likely fail. It's not part of the culture of LSJU and I'm fine with that. I don't go to football games because my band is great. If you do, then Stanford is probably not a great fit, so pick from one of the other 79 programs that marched this bowl season.Â

You're right, I can't speak for the Des Moines experience. But I'm going to knock the Midwest experience. I've lived in Detroit for over a year (I live there now), and I probably spent an accumulated eight months in Illinois, and I've spent time in Kansas City, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati and a dozen towns in between them. So I have a little bit of experience in the Midwest. So to your points:
The WINTER here is fxxxing looooong. Last winter it was snow in november, snow in April and snow in all points in between. May to September was beautiful, the October fall was stunning. But there are three months that are a living hell here.
I don't find the people in the Midwest friendlier. I like them just fine, I do. But I find them much more insular, much more closed-minded and less friendly than Californians, particularly northern Californians. So I'll respectfully disagree.

Perhaps it is more about us, as individuals, rather than any blanket quality of the respective regions. I've always felt that I could probably live just about anywhere in the country and be wildly happy if I were among people with whom I feel close. My general fondness for people from Iowa is probably very heavily related to my psychological/emotional/social/etc. profile, which in turn probably relates heavily to the fact that I was born and raised in that region.Â
I really am skeptical that if you take a random sample of 100,000 folks from two selected regions and tried to compare them, that there would be a pronounced abundance of nice people in one and a dearth of such in the other. I have very little doubt that each of us would probably find that we experienced one group as being nicer than the other, but that has to do with our personal package of preferences, assumptions, perceptions etc.

That's always been my experience. I was in Hawaii over xmas and someone mentioned how nice the people were, and I just said "we're only interacting with people in service roles, those people are almost always pretty nice everywhere." Which has certainly been my experience. I think that "the people there are so nice" is one of those inane tropes that needs to die.

I think you have to give her credit for transparency. The issue has always been about Iowa fans being upset about the result of the games. She at least has come up with a suggestion for changing the result.

I think you have to give her credit for transparency. The issue has always been about Iowa fans being upset about the result of the games. She at least has come up with a suggestion for changing the result.

For anybody who thinks comedian Bill Burr is funny, he went to the Rose Bowl and you can hear his impression of the band's halftime show between 24:30 and 28:30 in this youtube audio.

I had no idea who Bill Burr is [and, if my brain cooperates, I will forget him as quickly as possible], but, from listening to about 30 seconds of his NSFW remarks, there is no doubt in my mind that, if asked which transcript -- the LSJUMB halftime show or a transcript of what I just listened to -- is more offensive, his remarks would be the overwhelming winner. It is kind of amusing, though, hearing a guy who apparently is paid by the number of F words he can fit into one sentence, criticize the Band for not being original...

Sorry guys, I think Bill Burr nailed it there. I think that's how most of the country feels about the Stanford band. That hipster tendency to mock that which they deem "beneath" them, all the while in a completely sanitized and witless way. Stanford band members are the type of kids that will take their fevered Black Lives Matter protests to the sort of space where they can assure they won't come across any actual impoverished black people.

I suppose it's possible you actually know a member of the Stanford Band and she/he is just as you describe...but I doubt it.
