I  thought the idea that the Band was  looking for a new rival because it doesnt have much in common with the UCB band, and that given that we are known as the Farm and have cows on campus, that UI might be a good match, was mildly witty. Of course I couldnt figure out what the band was doing in real time, so misunderstanding by the UI folks was likely, but after reading the script, I just dont understand the complaints. Especially not from a fan base that booed our players before the game.

Maybe the band needs to implement "trigger warnings" and create "safe spaces" at stadiums/sarc.

If someone is looking to take offense at you, they will do so pretty much whatever you do, and this show is about as perfect an example of that as one could imagine.  Opposing fans take offense at the Stanford Band; it's what they do.  And, when their team is getting crushed, the likelihood of that is magnified exponentially.

If the Band had called that cow the "WildCaff" and had it run all over the field, what would the Iowa fans have done?  They would have booed, taken offense, and written nasty letters.  Or, as has been mentioned already, what if the Band had formed a square and played "We are the Champions" and "Another One Bites the Dust"?  The Iowa fans would have booed and written nasty letters [indeed, arguably with more justification at the lack of sportsmanship on the Band's part, given the score at that point].

And, in this case, the show really did provide more information to the country about Stanford:  Presumably a lot more people [at least in Iowa] now know that it's "The Farm"...  :)

Sometimes [and one can certainly debate the magnitude/frequency of "some"], the Band gives offense.  Sometimes, however, offense is taken.  I really think this time was one of those latter instances.

Of course, if they REALLY wanted to offend opposing fans, they could simply play "Fight On" incessantly throughout the entire game...

Wow...a kind comment from garvin AND a men's basketball victory that did not require scrabbling back in the last few seconds from a massive, game-long, double-digit deficit, all within the last 24 hours.  It doesn't get much better than that [other than a 45-16 Rose Bowl victory, I suppose  ;D ]

And lest everyone thing I'm a holier than thou band purist (which you do anyway no matter what I say, kind of like the band's critics), I've been there and done that.  At one annual Greek Week talent show, the crowd gathered in our TV lounge decided that regardless of talent or lack thereof, we were not going to leave minimum participation points on the table.  So we decided we would simply sing a Van Halen and/or Rush song a capella and then come back to the Love Boat episode in which we were engrossed. We trouped over to the EE Auditorium en masse wearing what we were wearing.  In honor of Charles Mingus, I wore my pork (sans pie) hat.

We followed one of the historically black frats who brought the house down with a step routine.  Problemo one.  Then we took the stage. Problemo two.  "Way to dress up douche bags."  Then we sang.  Problemos three and four.  I said Van Halen or Rush, but in the fog of war I think we did Van Halen and Rush. And maybe a few others.  We sucked. Out Loud.  Total humiliation.  Stuff was thrown.

The next year screening tryouts were held for both Greek Week and Homecoming talent shows.  Fortunately we found a pledge with talent.  Composed his own music and played the piano well.  Never won, but really unique and appreciated.

I've heard from numerous Iowa fans that the Stanford band has been banned from road games in 2016 as well because of the Band's Rose Bowl halftime show.  I cannot find any reputable source confirming that, however.

Thanks for posting that article.  Sounds like an impromptu rally at Larry Wilson's house is in order next time the Band is in LA.

It also sounds like it might be time for another "Apologies" halftime show, where the Band takes the blame for pretty much anything bad you can think of.  IIRC, they did one a few years back.

Finally, don't know if it's already been mentioned -- this thread FOURTEEN PAGES long, after all  :o -- but it strikes me as just a little ironic that, if Kansas State brings its band out to the game next year, the LSJUMB [such as it will be a few weeks before school starts] will be the only band on the field that wasn't actually fined this season [at least as far as I know...  ;) ]:

Maybe they can play off of the "Thanks Obama" meme going around. I realized my 10 year old son was starting to get sarcastic humor as we watched his younger brother's soccer match in the fall. When one of the teammates missed an easy goal, he mumbled "Thanks Obama" just loud enough for everyone near by to hear it.

MT, I don't have any further details about review of the script.  Iowa and the Rose Bowl may not admit that they also pre-viewed it even if they did.

The Band may have altered the script after it was approved.  This would give plausible deniability to the Rose Bowl and Iowa that the show as performed did not meet their values.  And we will probably hear more non-apology apologies from Stanford ("we are sorry if anyone was offended.")
