Slide, I must reply not as a representative of the grammar police, but as a supporter of correct taxonomy. When I first read the subject heading, I thought you were referring to the Miami Marlins. Yes, there's a great deal of controversy regarding both the Marlins owner and the local politicians. For those of you who are not baseball fans, the Miami nee Florida Marlins just opened up a new stadium last year. Its construction costs were $634 million, of which Miami-Dade County paid $376 million and the City of Miami $132 million. The ire stems over owner Jeff Loria's promise to keep a $100 million payroll for a competitive team if the stadium were built. It was, and Loria then sliced the team's salaries to $32 million, the second lowest in the majors. The second problem is the financing. Since it's primarily driven by bonds, the total cost to retire that debt over 40 years will be $2.4 billion!Â
I'm sure the anger over the expenses of Marlins Park played no small role in the decision not to pony up the $400 million for Sun Life Stadium, the home of the Dolphins.
Here's the reason I'm posting. The dolphins are mammals, not fish. It's a common error, though. Even marine biologist George Costanza made that mistake.
