UCSD students vote to fund Div. I sports
It looks like their move up to D1 is contingent on receiving an invitation from the Big West Conference, and that invitation is very likely.
UCSD currently plays a few sports not sponsored by the Big West, but sponsored by the Pac-12. They are:Â
Men's Crew
Women's Crew
Men's Swimming and Diving
Women's Swimming and DivingÂ
Would you support adding UCSD to our league for those sports? Keep in mind that the Pac-12 already has four affiliate members (Boise State, Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield for wrestling and SDSU for men's soccer.)Â
UCSD also plays a couple sports not sponsored by either league but sponsored by the MPSF (men's volleyball and men's water polo.) Unfortunately, even with their inclusion we wouldn't have the necessary 6 teams to sponsor them as Pac-12 sports. Though in the case of men's volleyball we could also invite UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. That would match what we do with wrestling, which consists of 3 full members and 3 affiliate members.Â
UCSD also has a fencing program but there aren't enough schools in the western US that do for even the MPSF to sponsor the sport, let alone the Pac-12.
