I agree that Ted is one of the better analysts of PAC 12 football, but interestingly enough, he has a self-described Stanford problem. Every year for the last number of years, he hasn't picked Stanford to win the PAC 12, and sure enough, we've prove him wrong too often. This year he decided he had been wrong too many times with his pre-season picks so he picked the Cardinal. I wonder if his pick against us this weekend is the "old" Ted resurrecting himself or if he has some other reason to pick the Bruins.

This game hinges on one thing: Which UCLA defense is real, the one that let up 5 ypc to Nevada or the one that let up <1 ypc to BYU? If it's the former, we ought to win comfortably, if it's the latter, then it's tight and picking the home team is reasonable.
I think we can do a reasonable job of shutting down UCLA's offense and keeping them <20, but can we score that against them? I think the tenor of the game will be obvious after the first two drives, but I'm not super confident going in.

This game hinges on one thing: Which UCLA defense is real, the one that let up 5 ypc to Nevada or the one that let up <1 ypc to BYU? If it's the former, we ought to win comfortably, if it's the latter, then it's tight and picking the home team is reasonable.
I think we can do a reasonable job of shutting down UCLA's offense and keeping them <20, but can we score that against them? I think the tenor of the game will be obvious after the first two drives, but I'm not super confident going in.

I think it basically comes down to Wilner being confident that Stanford will win by a reasonable amount, so feels comfortable picking against the current spread.
As others have noted, that makes me nervous.

Yeah, he usually does it if the line has changed by a large amount or changed which team was favored between when it opened and he posts (like it did with us this week, 4 points is a big swing).

He supposedly does it when the line moves substantially. But as others have noted, there have been biggish line moves where he has gone with the opening line. My guess is that if the line change doesn't materially alter his opinion, he will use the updated line.
