Well that was brutal. Was at the game. Talked to some old-timers about Buddy ball and Walt Harris. Got home. Took some time to decompress. Watched the recording.

In a way, the game felt slightly less disastrous on the second viewing -- Falk made some great passes and his receivers made some very good catches (mixed in with some blown coverage and missed tackles).

I am hopeful that when Marx, Taboada and Tucker(?) are healthy again, the blocking will improve. *especially* when Marx is back -- I saw multiple run plays get blown up because the fullback ran past an end or lb who eventually makes the play, and several missed pass blocks that hopefully Marx makes.

I am hopeful that when Owusu comes back it will mean another reciever getting open and fewer dropped balls.

I haven't watched a replay of the game, but I am curious how the linebackers did.  It seemed like the Cougar backs, when they ran, seemed to pick up extra yards all game long after the initial hit.

Watched the replay with a focus on the DL & ILB.  DL actually did all right, but ILBs were atrocious both in run stopping (they couldn't) and pass coverage which was beyond awful.  I only watched through 35-10 because at that point the entire D was gassed and the game was effectively over.

It is really interesting how at the QB, OL, and LB positions it seems like people failed to "separate" themselves as clear starters before the season started, and now this is where we continue to have question marks.  I was hopeful it was due to higher level of talent overall, but no longer believe this one bit.  My current hypothesis is that at these positions we don't have the intangibles this year that deliver "intellectually brutal" performance.

Much of that is the architecture.  The aluminum upper stadium helped increase the noise a bit over the old earth stadium, but concrete or steel would be better than thin aluminum at reflecting the sound, and the lower portion sunk into the earth just deadens noise all the more.  Remember they actually dug the field six feet deeper when they built the new stadium, so they increased its sound deadening properties.  Perhaps our fans are not as loud, but there is little that can be done about the deadening effect of the stadium.  A cantilevered roof like Husky stadium might help increase the noise--maybe some of the engineers on the Cardboard can suggest other ideas.

I was previously asked by her husband to stop standing up because I interfered with his wife's line of sight as they sat on their hands. The thump and splash of pepsi on my back was second only to the look of satisfaction on her face as I turned around and caught her steely stare and the sense of satisfaction in her eyes. I was an employee of the Stanford athletic department at the time and had been working the game during the first half and halftime doing marketing promotions. I was wearing my game-day "uniform" and went up into the stands to watch the last quarter with my family. needless to say we were all just stunned by her temerity. Oh those shady-side memories.

I also remember sitting near two guys who spent the entire game discussing their relative 401(k) plans. At the end I wouldn't have been surprised if neither one knew (or cared) who won.
