To me the main plus is he improved significantly after his rough first 2 starts. Still the biggest question I have is his accuracy. And that is job 1 as far as I'm concerned. He has the arm strength and the mobility. If his accuracy improves he has the chance to be pretty darn good. But that is a  biggest if.

He reminds me a lot of Randy Fasani. A gifted athlete with a great arm. But not particularly accurate.

Yeah, I think long time Stanford fans have seen the movie before. Gifted athletes with strong arms that never became successful because they continued to struggle with accuracy. Hopefully Chryst won't fall into that category.

Caleb Bowman's drop very likely cost Fasani a shot at a major bowl. Not great stats but damn good enough at the time. An outside chance that beating WSU could have propelled them into the NC.

Caleb Bowman... that was the guy I was thinking of in response to the thread about our lack of stretch-the-field wide receivers.  Bowman was wicked fast, but didn't stretch defenses because he was simply not a great pass catcher.

That may be a close comparison, they were both guys who are big and athletic - almost to the point where you might imagine them playing linebacker if they were not QBs. (I guess Fasani did play TE(?) for awhile, he's credited with two catches his freshman year.) Both could run, had big arms, and both had issues with accuracy (though Chryst's career story is far from fully told).

However, it may also be worth noting that Fasani's career completion percentage was 51% whereas Cryst is at 57%; a significant difference. Fasani also never had three games in a row where he put together as good passing stats as Chryst did vs Oregon, Cal, and Rice (in which Chryst completed 66% of his passes with a PER=180.5.)


[Figuring out in detail Fasani's best three game stretch is a little tricky given that stats from ca. 2000 are tough to find easily, coupled to the fact that Fasani got injured a lot so missed a lot of gametime. It does appear that during Fasani's time playing, Stanford never had a three game stretch with passing stats as good as Chryst's finishing flourish. The best I saw for the team during Fasani's tenure would be 60% completions, PER=138 (2001 vs UCLA, UW, UA).  Of course three games is a vaery small sample, so I wouldn't read too much into that.]

Though in 2001 we threw a little more, more extreme down the field, and for a lower percentage. 

Yards/attempt tells you something about the efficiency of the pass game regardless of style, yds/completion says a little about type of pass game you are running.

In 2001 Fasani averaged 17.2 yds/completion [that's a big number], 8.86 yds/att.

Fasani did play TE and LB in 1999 for a few plays, even though he was also part of the 3-headed Rose Bowl QB machine.
