I think I understand your point, but the man was born in Honolulu and lived his entire life in Hawaii. We refer to Walker Little as a Texan, Trenton Irwin as a Californian, Ben Edwards as a Floridian ... Indeed Hawaiian also has an ethnic definition but referring to someone from the state as Hawaiian isn't incorrect.

This may be so from your perspective, and quite possibly, the vast majority of the rest of the population (except for those living in Hawaii, or who have Hawaiian blood, and those who know). But I would bet that if you called him Hawaiian, he would correct you that he isn't one.

I'm gonna go with JJJ here. We don't really refer to American diplomatic/military kids by the denonyms native to their nation of birth. They're Americans who were born in Korea, Germany, France, etc. Hawai'i has a painful enough history to work through without diluting the meaning of what I think is a specific cultural term (sure "native Hawai'ian" could work, but it falls victim to the same dilution).
I'm gonna go with JJJ here. We don't really refer to American diplomatic/military kids by the denonyms native to their nation of birth. They're Americans who were born in Korea, Germany, France, etc. Hawai'i has a painful enough history to work through without diluting the meaning of what I think is a specific cultural term (sure "native Hawai'ian" could work, but it falls victim to the same dilution).

I understand the issue and the associated sensitivity, but working with several Hawaiians I can attest to the fact that the term "native Hawaiian" is commonly used, with pride. We can agree to disagree, but it would surprise me if Toner would object to being referred to as Hawaiian. I don't see the analogy to Americans born abroad.

As a redhead who grew up in Hawaii, I can contribute this.
Kama'aina is the term most frequently used to refer to someone who lives in Hawaii but clearly isn't what everyone thinks of as Hawaiian. It is supposed to apply to all residents, but it mostly gets used to describe caucasians who live there.

Haole is another great one. I remember someone saying it means "foreigner", but that's not how it's used. It's used to describe white people, but it doesn't distinguish between locals and visitors.

My Hawaiian cousin tells me that it originally meant "foreigner" (sort of like gai-jin) and predated Captain Cook. The caucasians showed up first and in numbers, so the term genericized to mean caucasians.
