I only watched the game on a stream, but I do not recall seeing the following players on the field.  I am correct?  Where there other notable absences?

Hall, Tyler, Peek, Arcega-Whiteside, Tucker, Palma, Speights

A few thoughts.

Malik Antoine seemed to be very active.  Does anyone have a view on how the second DL played? 

Cameron Scarlett seems to have taken a big step forward.  Wonder if his high school injury hampered his performance last year.

The debuts of Wedington and Parkinson were impressive.

Run blocking was as expected and the pass protection was solid.

Glad the delay of game bug only got us a few times. 

Was hoping to see more from Robinson and the outside linebackers.  Seemed that they lost the edge too often and were not getting to the QB in passing situations.

Our TE's and going to be a match up nightmare for opponents.

Based on my one viewing of the contest, which included some in-game DVR rewinding and re-watching, here are some things that grabbed my attention.  I'm leaving out the expected or not particularly noteworthy and focusing on the good and not good around question marks we have had about this team.

The Good
Offense
- Herbig was dominant
- Burkett looked much better than I can ever remember him being
- Insane OL depth in general
- Walker Little sure can bend his hips and move his feet; he and Sarell played together a lot
- Best TEs in the country?
- Parkinson and Wedington look like best True Frosh receiving options in a long time
- Costello (so clearly better than Burns)
Defense
- Phillips was pretty much unblockable
- Cotton really seemed to have an impact
- Did they even throw a single ball at Meeks?
- Reid really strong performance
- Malik Antoine looks like the top Nickel option, seems to have surpassed Buncom
- Nice to see Barton, Okereke, and Alfieri get most of the reps with 1st unit

The not Good
Offense
- Burns is a capable #3, but he's a #3, the passing game is just too fast for him
- Hamilton clear weak link; Hall was presumably #1, but I don't see how Little isn't the starter at RT very soon
Defense
- Nothing I saw against Rice in any way changes my DL concern, in fact, I'm now more concerned*

* I'm guessing Rice got 2/3 of its rushing yards when Phillips wasn't playing.

Overall, what is there to really complain about?  As I mentioned last week, a blowout doesn't guarantee a championship team, but only teams that blowout teams like Rice can be considered that caliber.  It was great to see validation of Shaw's assertion the offense would be more productive because they would spread the ball to more people, and Parker and Wedington are clearly special talents. When's the last time at least seven Stanford receivers had at least 40 yards?  And people were concerned about WRs...

One note.  Some people will be concerned about the lack of a pass rush, but the Rice offensive scheme made it difficult to conventionally rush the passer as a result of the constant jet sweep threat. In fact, Rice scored its only touchdown when several Stanford defenders thought the QB had the ball when he didn't.

Loved KJ's frozen ropes.  Am I crazy to think he has a better arm than Andrew?  The only obstacle between him and starting must be command of the playbook.  He needs a STRIVR in his dorm room.

Me either.  They didn't run the ball nearly as well when Sarell and Little were both playing, but they also were playing with Powell, Chaffin, and Maihen, not Herbig, Burkett, Fanaika/Wilson.

Hamilton had a bit of a problem with a quick outside pass rusher and Chryst paid the price.

Barton got turned around in pass coverage and Rice`s Stewart caught  a pass downfield on the sideline over his head.

Wedington flat out belongs and I suspect he will become better every game as he gains experience and is utilized creatively.  I will stand by my initial impression that he is a Winesberry/Milburn clone and will be a big part of our team this year.

Tyler made a bad decision on the first punt return by calling for a fair catch when he had a 15-20 yard return in the bag.

Chryst threw into coverage a few times and that decision making concerned me.

I have to take a closer look at our run defense to discover why we were vulnerable to misdirection and the jet sweep.  We generally handled  Oregon States jet sweep pretty well.

Costello looks raw but he looks like a player who could be very good in the future.  He will be the back up very soon as his talent far surpasses Burns and he seems to play with a killer instinct which I love, no pun intended.

All I can say about Parkinson and the other TE`s is that I hope Shaw continues to use them creatively and that if he does, it makes it that much more difficult to focus on our bread and butter running game.

Per the previous discussions about whether Costello was over-hyped -- I think he is who is was supposed to be.  Given how Shaw tends to operate he won't be starting this year (or maybe/likely next year either) unless Chryst gets hurt or regresses, but I am now more comfortable about QB depth.  He looked like a player.
