Does ND decide to discontinue their s annual game? When they decided to add Stanford as an annual counterpunch to their game with SC, I'm sure they thought they would win 75%+ of their games. Is an annual trip to CA worth it if they lose more than half to Stanford?

Assuming we hold on, we will be 7-2 since 2009, with the Irish winless in CA.

That we are a good football team in a region of the country that they try to heavily recruit is an added bonus. As such, I don't think they will be dropping Stanford any time soon.

I think you are spot on there. Not sure why so many Stanford fans dislike this series. It focuses national attention on us (good for recruiting) and we certainly win our share.

My Dad is a Michigan alum, and Notre Dame already kept Michigan State and Stanford on schedule, while dropping Michigan once in 2014. While they will play UM in 2018 and 2019, they clearly value the ND-Stanford matchup over the matchup with Michigan.

Regarding scheduling Cal, I should clarify my previous post to say that Notre Dame leadership loves scheduling Stanford because they claim it is a matchup of the two FBS schools with the best academics. In fact, I have heard that some ND fans try to claim that their football academic standards are higher than ours (I know). Notre Dame plays plenty of great academic schools already as part of their schedule (Boston College, Navy, as well as ACC scheduling this year against UNC and Wake Forest). Playing another good academic school isn't enough, just as a 9-3 season isn't enough for them. They want to play the best, and beat the best. ND plays Stanford because we have the best FBS academic standards (when we are the only school where a recruit has to get admitted to Stanford prior to accepting their offer), and everyone knows it.

Unfortunately for them, that is three in a row in the series for us, and we have won 5 in a row at home against the Domers.

ND values a Calif trip every year for recruiting. Unfortunately for the Irish, this is not your fathers Cardinal. So  the trip to Pali Alto comes now with a price. And a couple years ‘15 and ‘17 a heavy one.

I dont disagree that we should play ND, but from their perspective, I think it has hurt them to give us the publicity. The rise of Stanford may have hurt them more than any other team. They used to be the nationwide magnet for top athletes that cared about academics and integrity (at least by reputation). That is now the sandbox we play in, and pretty successfully. They have helped to enable a significant competitor, but that horse has left the barn so probably no benefit in stopping the series, and I think at this point it helps their brand also. And I give them credit, they play a solid SOS, year in and out, despite not really being in a conference.

It helped that the Apple Cup was a blowout. People started switching from the Apple cup to our game after the first half hour. The Stanford-ND audience grew as the Washington audience declined, eventually by more than a million. The audience was at it's peak when Stanford took control of the game.
