Without looking it up, my sense was that Chryst favored Irwin - perhaps too much so in that he tended to lock onto him. I think Costello has spread it around a lot more.

Does Irwin wear jersey #2 when playing WR and #30 when returning kicks ?  If so, why two different jersey numbers for the same player ?

That's perfectly fine, but causes a problem on special teams, as two players with the same number cannot be on the field at the same time. Brandon Simmons (also #2) plays on most special teams, so when Irwin goes in he needs a different number.

I don't remember where I saw this but I think the numbers in the 50's, 60's and 70's are not to be used for positions that normally touch the ball on offense, i.e. backfield and receivers.  I believe it is supposed to help the officials detect when an ineligible receiver is downfield.
