We did our best to give the game away, but BYU just barely didn't do enough to take our gift.
Turnovers, matador defense, poor FT shooting with a side of long 3 point shots by non-3 point shooters was the recipe for the first half of the game. We trailed 39-30 at one point, and I felt fortunate going into the half trailing only 39-35.
We slowly started to play better and built a 14 point lead 62-48. Everything was going well until it stopped going well. We hit a brick wall. Turnovers, missed shots, more missed FTs, and placing a red carpet in the paint once again was how BYU made their comeback in the last minute of the game.
We were smart to foul, up 3 with 5 seconds to go. Best yet, their FT was missed, and now they had to go for the intentional miss. They missed, but we fumble the ball going to the ground after getting the rebound. The BYU guy, Haws (who looks to be 30 years old) picks up the ball, goes to the corner, and shoots the "tying" 3-pointer. It was right in front of me, and I had a great view. It was a perfect line from the shooter's hand to the basket. I followed that shot and thought the game is tied when I saw it arcing up. Fortunately, it bounced off the rim, and the time expired before they could get another shot off.
We played poorly (give us a C or C+ at best), but in March, it's all about getting the win regardless of style points.
