Forbes' is out with its latest survey of best colleges which "focuses on educational outcomes..."  Stanford is 5 (Harvard is 6, Yale 14, UND 18, Duke 22).  No other Pac-12 school is ranked in the top 50.  Including UC-East Bay (a further sign of their diminished reputation).  Top ten below:

Obviously a comparison of many fruits (not just apples and oranges).

They also look at MBA programs based on the return on investment (loss of income and tuition and other factors).  Stanford GSB shows pre-MBA salary of $77,000 and post as $215,000

I don't know what an educational outsome is, or even presumably an educational outcome, or how Forbes would measure one; but I do know that Berkeley is north and west of Palo Alto.  I got that educational outcome somewhere, most likely by using California State Plane Coordinates for the past 25 years or so.

Garvin, now you've got me thinking of a campus proximal coffeehouse version of this grift; how about a few more data points? I'm visualizing use of hand gestures to accompany my narrative, and could compress the scale enough that I could still encompass Reagan by extending my right arm out completely. Two more would seem sufficient.

Any suggestions that might be universal for say, Davis, CA; Boston, Austin?

Here's another reason for Kal alums to be so cranky.  Perhaps the fact that they scored below both Stanford and Santa Clara on starting salaries and mid career salaries.  At least they were ahead of USC.

Here's another reason for Kal alums to be so cranky.  Perhaps the fact that they scored below both Stanford and Santa Clara on starting salaries and mid career salaries.  At least they were ahead of USC.
