I missed the game live and just finished watching the recording.  Wow, just wow, what a classic finish.  I don't think there's any doubt that Kiana is one of the greatest clutch performers in Stanford WBB history -- not just this wonderful game, but the way she can just dominate in the 2nd half down the stretch on any given night.

Lexie just had a bizarre game and I hope she's able to shake it off.  I worry about the pounding she's been taking lately.  Poor Lacie picked up at least 2 of her fouls on atrocious calls, including the one where 2 CU players collided and she got called for it.  Prechtel, IMHO, had some really bad misses tonight and I was surprised to see in the box score that she was only 2 for 9; I suspected worse. She did hit the floor hard at one point and that might have been a factor.

I thought Brown looked good in the all-too-brief time she got, and I've been a Brown skeptic before.  Very nice game for Dodson; we can really use her down the stretch.  And there was a time when we went to the zone and it worked very well to disrupt CU.  Hollingshed and Sherrod are superior athletes out there and I'm surprised we didn't zone them more often.

But gosh, we had a lot of chances to put the game away in the 2nd quarter and just kept shooting ourselves in the foot.  I hope we don't have to meet CU in the Pac tourney; they sure don't go down easily.  I'm glad for this win and grateful we don't appear to have picked up any new injuries.

We send our young women off to games in buses and airplanes to unfamiliar cities, field houses, gymnasiums, hotels and restaurants, and climate zones for game day. Then they have to play!
Why did they play so much better last week against a tougher team? Why can’t they make their field goals this week? What about free throws? Why did they throw the ball away on that play? Again, there are so many elements that make up the playing environment.
Colorado had a great preseason and went 11-0! They played some conference foes very well, others not so good. They almost beat UCLA. They lost by just three points and outscored UCLA 22-11 in the final quarter of their game. Who knows, maybe they will upset a top team in the PAC-12 Tourney, or they might get sent home after a drubbing! I think that the level of unpredictability makes the game interesting and probably holds our collective interests as much as the measurable elements.
So I watch our Stanford women from a different perspective. I don’t expect perfection, not even consistency, but I celebrate it when I see it. I yell loudly from the stands never knowing how my voice might encourage the team to play harder, more intense, or well enough to win. Maybe my voice will serve notice to a ref that they need to watch more closely and call the game more fairly (I’m still working on that one!). Maybe something out of our control will affect the game, maybe the team's pregame huddle will set the tone! The coaches provide strategy, and they also inspire confidence—their inputs influence the game. So what’s it going to be today?
It’s a complicated set of dynamics that play out in a game. I love being a fan for that reason! And I enjoy reading your perspectives before and after the game! And I'm filled with excitement when our players defy the odds and make plays such as Kianna's thrilling, game-ending baskets on Sunday.

I was watching the second half of this game yesterday at the airport while waiting for a flight and I was onboard the plane when the last few seconds happened. Coverage was spotty on the plane and the video literally froze when Kiana took her shot to tie the game. Refusing to wait 2+ hours to know the result, I quickly switched to ESPN to find out the result (knowing that the video was already lagging), hoping for the best (which in my mind was a game going into overtime) and preparing for the worst (Kiana missing the 3-pointer and Colorado icing the game on a couple of FTs). Instead I saw 69-66 Stanford and I was shocked and very happy and clicked the play-by-play for what happened. Not until I landed did I actually see the final sequence of events and it was one long continuous sequence, as I didn't know Colorado didn't have any timeouts left as I had assumed Kiana stole the inbound pass and had more time to set up the game winner.

I am very happy that we gritted it out and won. I am surprised that Tara tasked Lexie as the one who should drive to the basket. I've always seen her offensive strength as her jumpshots (whether 3-pointers or midrange) and yes, she can make layups, but those seems to be more predicated on backdoor cuts and outfoxing the defense rather than muscling through defenders. With Haley and DiJonai out, we do have limited options with that type of strategy though. We already ask Kiana to do so much otherwise and I am not sure Fran has the finishing touches yet at the basket to take the ball at the top of the key and turn around and head to the basket on a consistent basis yet.

We get Oregon State on Friday evening next, who still has to contend with UCLA first tonight, so they will be on a shortened week. Hopefully they will help us. Then an interesting matchup with Oregon next Monday. I'll be interested to see if we have made up any ground since last time. We have Dodson back in this meeting, but we no longer have Haley, but I'm not sure how that would make much of a difference and as the Ducks showed last season, homecourt advantage means little to them as they demolished us at Maples. Having Carrington back would be nice.

We also jumped 4 spots to #4 in the AP poll today as well.

Moschkau was also in on the first crucial in-bound at 23.7 seconds, when Prechtel took the unsuccessful 3. The line-up from then on was Prechtel, Lexie, Kiana, Moschkau and Fingall. I assumed Moschkau was in because Lacie had fouled out and Estella was the next best option for in-bounding the ball -- more height than Jump, Brown, or Wilson. And getting the ball in bounds was essential.

BTW, I don't recall any comments on this thread about the spectacular acrobatic, and accurate, pass that Lexie made to Kiana for the game tying 3. What Kiana did would not have happened if Lexie hadn't pulled that one off. IMHO she deserves a lot of credit for the final outcome.

A thought I've had before stirred by Baez87's post -- the quarter system doesn't help Stanford at all when it comes athletics.  Students have that many more midterms (1-2 per course, depending!), and the NCAA tournament schedule ramps up right alongside the conclusion of the winter quarter.  I'm sure the coaching and academic support staff review the tournament and academic calendars each year with the students to let them know that they'll need to schedule their classes accordingly...no 20-unit winter quarters if you want to survive!

That is right up there, in terms of end-game excitement and game-call, no?

Look, the player execution was tremendous and without every part of it, Stanford comes up short.

So I'll focus on the broadcaster.  It's hard to do - capture the play by play and the excitement, and Danna nailed it.  In comparison, check out the TV broadcast, where the announcers were basically bummed out by the bucket.  Serious question:  were those TV announcers somehow Buffs-related?  Because it was clear they were more concerned about Colorado's heartbreak than they were Stanford's excitement . . . which is very odd if the broadcast team is supposed to be neutral.  

Murph and Platz call of the Rhode Island comeback (leading to Final Four) and Pohlen's layup at the buzzer (also leading to Final Four) take the prize.  As for regular season games, nothing compares to Nick Robinson keeping Stanford undefeated in buzzer-beater over Arizona at maples (Dick Vitale:  "It's a MAD HOUSE in here!!").  But this one is awfully good, and the call of Danna will keep it up there over the years.

So I'll focus on the broadcaster.  It's hard to do - capture the play by play and the excitement, and Danna nailed it.  In comparison, check out the TV broadcast, where the announcers were basically bummed out by the bucket.  Serious question:  were those TV announcers somehow Buffs-related?  Because it was clear they were more concerned about Colorado's heartbreak than they were Stanford's excitement . . . which is very odd if the broadcast team is supposed to be neutral.  

Murph and Platz call of the Rhode Island comeback (leading to Final Four) and Pohlen's layup at the buzzer (also leading to Final Four) take the prize.  As for regular season games, nothing compares to Nick Robinson keeping Stanford undefeated in buzzer-beater over Arizona at maples (Dick Vitale:  "It's a MAD HOUSE in here!!").  But this one is awfully good, and the call of Danna will keep it up there over the years.
