Grew up with the same anti-SC bias in the family, but that has waned in my adult years, particularly as I see (and know) a lot of high-caliber kids - including a few nephews/nieces - go there. No two ways about it: SC is a high demand school for lots of quality HS seniors.
But your crack about "that formerly Methodist school down south" brought to mind one of the great quips from one of the all time legends - Hal Mickelson, the Voice of the Stanford band back in the day. Every so often on a roadie, Hal would be moved into making a "rally speech" to the assembled bandsters, typically after a field rehearsal or as we were ready to play a rally. And in one rant against SC - who in my time in college regularly beat the ever loving snot out of Stanford - Hal's theme was how there really is "good" and "evil" when it came to Stanford and USC (no doubt that sentiment informed by aforementioned ass-whoopings - Hal was (and is), after all, a die-hard sports fan). Anyway, during that inspiring oration, Hal referred to SC as "that Think Tank on Figueroa."
I still chuckle thinking about that after all these years.
