Unfortunate to say the least. Masks and social distancing and sanctions against large gatherings today are NOT sacrifices. Those who imply otherwise reveal character traits you don't want to be known for. Especially Stanford sports celebrities. BTW, I doubt the virus pays attention to Instagram, or any other social grievance platform in overdrive today.

I was at a neighbor's for a gathering yesterday. Everyone wore a mask other than when eating and we ate outside. It was the opposite of the tragedy KW-J might have assumed it to be.

I think the sad thing is that a lot of things such as restrictions of large gatherings, closures of businesses, and, at the extreme, shelterr-in-place/lockdown., are much larger infringements on freedom compared to compulsory mask-wearing, but that getting the disease under control, using less restrictive measures, including mask-wearing, will enable the removal of those restrictions more quickly.

It is disappointing that wearing a mask has become such a symbolic thing.  We don't complain about signs that say "No shirt, no shoes, no service" as taking away our freedoms to not wear a shirt or shoes, but I think it is unfortunate that mask-wearing has become such a symbol.

But in truth, a mask is just another item of clothing, worn for the same reason, i.e. to protect ourselves from the environment. Granted, the mechanism may be different, but the purpose is the same.

Only about half agree with this part. The idiots who think they have the right to do whatever they want are about 50% of the problem. The other 50% of the problem are people who can't/won't isolate when they are COVID-19 positive, won't cooperate with contact tracking, or can't/won't quarantine when they are contacts. Put those two together and you cover it.

Only about half agree with this part. The idiots who think they have the right to do whatever they want are about 50% of the problem. This is what I don't understand about "crushing the curve" arguments (aside from the fact that the US was so far behind in recognition and response that it wasn't going to happen without even more drastic measures).  

What's the end game of "crushing the curve?"  Everyone back to school with no masks?  Everyone back to bars and indoor dining with no masks?  I don't think that's correct.

You can say "well, we could be doing more stuff with masks."  Okay.  But again, what is the differentiatior for "doing more" or "doing less" - other than we are always not doing "enough" to "do more?"

BTW, you can "do more" now - if you're willing to be responsible and take appropriate action, where necessary.  See ND's dashboard.  56 active cases (550+ recovered) in a student population of 8600+  (.6%).  And no hospitalizations.  So many folks here said going to college in-person is foolhardy, reckless, etc.  Maybe.  And maybe that will prove out.  OTOH, maybe ND will "gut it out" and show folks that you can go to school.  So far, they seem to be doing a pretty good job.  I hope they are able to get through it okay.

Actually, it is pretty much that way in lots of places. Remember that Korea had an outbreak at a club and had to close the bars for a while? The issue is that to do this you have to get the case count real low and you have to be able to contact trace and isolate/quarantine every case that you subsequently do have. You are still going to be operating with a razor thin margin of error, but several nations have managed to do that.

We couldn't do that in the USA because a) we didn't have and did not develop "adequate" contact tracing and tracking capability and b) we never got the number of cases down to the point that what little contact tracking and tacking we did have had a prayer of containing the disease. It may be argued that there are several things about our society that make it impossible to do this. It is probable (IMHO) that even places like Korea will eventually fail. However, if there is a vaccine before that failure happens, there will be no failure. That was ostensibly the plan for the USA as well, but the politicians gave up on that idea really quick. In retrospect, they were probably right. We weren't going to do it anyway. Too bad they didn't just say that. Now we are incrementally approaching full Sweden (with even less compliance) whether we planned it that way or not.
