Correct, and any bonus amount over $125,000 for players drafted after the tenth round count against the bonus pool, so it's very likely that Montgomery will be on campus this fall. His Stanford commit was perceived to be strong hence he didn't appear in mocks, otherwise he would have been a top-20 pick in all likelihood.

For kicks I looked up the 1967 draft. One HOFer, Ted Simmons. Vida Blue, Dave Kingman, Don Baylor, Chris Chambliss. Also Dan Pastorini, Rex Kern, Archie Manning and in the 55th round Randy Vataha.

Indeed.  I think history has shown that the MLB draft is very much a crapshoot, and that exceptional players can emerge from virtually anywhere in the draft.  Mike Piazza was famously drafted in the 62nd round of the 1988 MLB draft as a favor to his father by Tommy Lasorda.

I know Bob is hoping he will come back, but it sounds like that's not in the cards.  So, thank you for some great memories, a wonderful season on his way out, an best of luck going forward.  As you probably can see from the ongoing discussions about Austin Slater in the Giants thread, we keep track of and root for our former players in the Big Leagues, and I will be rooting for Tawa to make it and thrive.  Junkie, you have a lot to be proud of.

In the meantime, I hope you stick around; your contributions to the discussions on Stanford baseball are much appreciated.

Baseball is hard. Tim made playing quarterback look effortless. Go look at his HUDL film for proof. Baseball has always been hard. I'm amazed at those who make it look easy. I will root for my kid and Brendan and CRob and everyone else in the Cardinal family to achieve at the highest level but appreciate the potholes ever present along the road and the work and good fortune necessary to overcome them.

I also told you. Sorry. It's just that I didn't fully appreciate it until this year. Tim was hitting .382 after WAZZU series then started hitting line drives into mitts. Then pressed, then more mitts. In a month, the BA was down to .264. "What's wrong with him?" people asked. But he was doing the same things! Pitchers pitch and 8 in the field try to stop you. Failure is not an option; it's a reality.

I went to high school with Dann Bilardello, who was a third round selection after high school, and a 1st round/secondary phase selection in 1978.  He batted about .350 or .360 in high school, which made me wonder how in the heck he would hit major league pitching?  Answer: he couldn't.  He was career .204 in eight MLB seasons.  Defensively, he was very strong...his second season he led the league in throwing out base stealers (42%) and did even better the next year, throwing out 49% (finishing third) and 37% for his career (Buster is 33%).  Very tough to succeed in MLB.
