A LOT of people across the nation are going to be paying attention to this game!!  This is going to be biggest spotlight for Stanford athletics in a LONG time (dare I say, ever?)

With Gameday coming to town and an 8pm EST kickoff, this game is already perceived as the game of the week for casual fans.  Fans of Boise State, Alabama, Oklahoma, and other teams still in the NCG hunt will be watching in hopes that we lose.  OK State will be watching for obvious reasons, especially if they take care of business at their 12:00 EST kickoff.  NFL fans, particularly in Miami/Indiana, will want to watch the messiah Luck against the best team Stanford has faced this year.  EVERYONE WILL BE WATCHING!!

We also had a grassroots campaign to promote Toby Gerhart for Voldemort. He went from unknown to runner up in the tightest voting ever. I'd say the campaign was pretty successful.

We're new to Gameday and to being in national championship contention, but we'll use our own methods to drum up interest.

Now, if I were a fan of a team that hadn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1959, I might have to start a Facebook page with directions for how to find I-5. Then, people would really laugh at me.

You need to keep it down when your team is trying to snap the ball. Otherwise, they can't hear the play call. You can yell all you want during and after the play. Yell when the other team is trying to snap the ball to disrupt the cadence of the snap and to make it difficult to hear the plays that are being called.

My apologies to the true Stanford fans that care about winning and losing, and actually stand and scream for Stanford at football games.  This message isn't for you.  This is a little outside perspective for those who cast aspersions on people who do stand and scream at sports events, and are still interested enough in sports to read this board...

You can't pretend something isn't that important until it is, and then complain when people are dismissive of you when you do show you care.

Reminds me of when Stanford upset USC.  The default position for Stanford fans at the time was "we're better than USC because we're not a football factory.  Who cares if they beat us in football."  Then, after the upset, you see Stanford fans going around in T-shirts touting the victory, as if it was a meaningful accomplishment.  If it was meaningful to win it was meaningful to lose.  Not too many Stanford people had the courage to admit losing mattered, but a whole lot eagerly proclaimed winning did.

If Stanford loses to Oregon it doesn't matter.  Stanford is really superior because it doesn't recruit Cliff Harris. But if Stanford wins there will be a hue and cry about why Stanford isn't #2 in the BCS rankings.  That attitude is a brobdingnagian turnoff.  You'll be liked a whole lot more by admitting losing sucks (you can even add it isn't the end of the world).  Don't act like anyone that stands and cheers for a team - more frequently than you have deemed appropriate - just isn't as good as you, and you'll even earn respect.

California fans suck because they tolerate and rationalize losing too much.  However, at least they are strong enough to admit losing hurts, don't need instructions on how to support their team, and will show it long before a 9-0 record.  Some Stanford people need a game with national title implications to declare football means something.  And then they need instructions on how to support their team because they have never done it before.  Well guess what?  If you do make any noise and do support the team against Oregon, you'll be just like Alabama fans.  Are you sure you really want to sink to that level?

I read it as being directed toward those who don't care to fawn over the ESPN-appointed deities deigning to descend upon Stanford this week.  That was my mistake and I apologize.

You don't know anything about how any individual here acts at a game...or our levels of passion... and we certainly don't need to be reminded of the lack of same from some of our brethren; it's been a topic of discussion here more than once. Sure, the football fan in me wishes that we had the volume of rabid fans seen at Alabama or even Oregon.  But I don't think that will ever be the case.  Instead I actually take comfort in the fact that a large number of the Stanford community seems to be relatively clueless as to the goings-on of the football team.  I will be enormously bummed out if Stanford loses to Oregon.  I would venture to guess that a lot of the people on the board will be too.  But for the first time in a long time, Stanford football is legitimately in the middle of national dialogue, and as such a larger percentage of the community has taken notice.  I have no problem with the fact that this means they might need some help in how to support the team.  If other schools want to make fun of us for needing a facebook page to rally the troops, then I'm ok with that.

I'm pointing out how it rubs a lot of people the wrong way when people put down people in SEC country for being so fanatical about college football (and sports in general), and then those same people turn around and act the same way when their team reaches a certain level of performance.  As for the Facebook page, just show up at a game and act like you are in Rome.

Yvonne, Cal fans do suck.  You can come up with myriad reasons.  But neither fan base has great fans.  All things considered, Stanford's are better IMO because they don't apologize for or tolerate mediocrity.  And now that Harbaugh and Shaw have shown what is possible in an era of big media dollars for sports, Stanford's standard of football performance has been raised higher than ever and seems likely to stay high.  That more than anything is what it takes to build a stronger, more passionate fan base.
