That won't happen in this case. As Cristobal is an alum of the school he will be able to stay for 8-10 years, that's the rule. The U has hit tougher times over the last ten years, so it might take a few years to get the program into credible CFP consideration range.
He will get time and the financials likely will favor a few years of stability too.
Cristobal makes $7 million now, so I am guessing he will get a contract for 5 years and $9 million before bonuses. The U would also have to pay $9 million to buyout the UofO contract that only drops a little bit in Jan 2022. The buyout costs and a multiyear deal will make firing him rather expensive unless another donor group with the U then agrees gift the school the $20-$30 million it would cost to terminate Cristobal, pay a different coach's buyout and offer that coach $11 or $12 million per year which might not even approach the going rate for top jobs in 2024.
Back to our conference, if Cristobal leaves the event will create a cascade of events in the Pac-12. It is unlikely Miami (or Cristobal) will want a bunch of assistants not familiar with recruiting throughout the entire SEC footprint. So one of the better Pac-12 jobs will be open and there could be a lot of shuffling at the staff level.
