If he does leave as seems reasonable to assume, it appears it could have an impact on other Pac-12 jobs. Justin Wilcox - who I believe would KILL IT at Oregon - and Chip Kelly - who already has KILLED IT at Oregon - seem to be among the top candidates to replace Cristobal should he depart.

Kelly is not liked at UCLA, and Cal fans seem to want Wilcox gone for some reason I simply cannot fathom. My guess is Kelly would be most likely to leave his current spot, but either leaving would be intriguing.

I am not so sure Cristobal has decided what he wants to do. We all know that a coach’s second stint with a program is no guaranteed success, so I’d root for a return to Eugene for Kelly if Cristobal leaves, I think. UCLA would likely struggle, I think, if Kelly leaves at this point.

I don't know why y'all don't take Justin Wilcox seriously. Let me use a Formula One analogy here.

Mercedes is the top team on F1, having won the last several constructor championships. This year is leads Red Bull with one race left in the season. Think of them as Oregon in this analogy.  

The Williams team has been in the bottom of the constructor's standings in F1 for several years, including being #8 of 10 teams this season. This of them as Cal in this analogy. George Russell is an F1 driver for the Williams team. Think of him as Justin Wilcox.

George Russell has never won a race and in 50+ races finished above 10th just three times. Last year when Lewis Hamliton was out with Covid, Russell replaced him with a car good enough to win. He did not even finish the race. Despite having a forgettable career in terms of results otherwise, this year Russell was able to finish 2nd once.

Yet despite these meager results, after seeing him finish 2nd, Mercedes has signed Russell to drive for them in 2022. Like the driver needs to be talented, so too does a College Football Head Coach, but without a program committing significant resources and talent to winning, neither a driver or coach is going to be successful in a highly competitive endeavor.

You put Justin Wilcox in a program with Oregon's resources and commitment and he will crush it. His Cal teams way over perform their talent on a routine basis. Are there some stinkers? Sure.  But in the main, he keeps Cal more competitive than they should be, even in losses, IMO. So pooh-pooh Justin Wilcox all you want for not winning enough at a school that cares less about winning football games than any school in the Pac-12. But don't lose track of what a difference joining one that prioritizes winning can make in one's ability to win games.

As I understand it...

It was very odd and to me a classic "accident" in the sense a series of things happened in a certain way that led to a failure of some sort when they combined.

That substantial offer was prepared on November 25th and eleven days later no extension has been signed, so he's definitely not off the market. He's in a good spot at Baylor but born and raised in California. He was definitely interested in the USC job, not sure about his interest in Oregon.

This cycle has taught us that even the most unexpected hires are possible and that schools are willing to offer mega contracts to get who they want. The Oregon situation will be fascinating given their resources and how well positioned they are from a competitive standpoint at the moment.
