I have this happy habit of searching the news after a big win, and found a story in the Tucson paper that sheds some light on these two points. Apparently, Yeaney and Cam are friends from Portland area and had a laugh about the hard screen. Also Coach Barnes gave Thomas credit for shutting down Haley, not Yeaney.

Great article! Thanks for sharing. I don't read Barnes as saying Thomas shut down Haley, but that she should be credited for the team's lockdown defense generally (and both in this game and in general). And I think the writer then drew the inference that she was the cause of Haley's bad game. But it was Yeaney who was hounding Jones near the paint, blocking her shot or stealing the ball, several times. Specifically, I had several sequences in mind:
Q1:
7:49 Haley Jones Turnover. 2 - 6
7:49 Bendu Yeaney Steal. 2 - 6
1:45 Haley Jones missed Layup. 13 - 17
1:45 Bendu Yeaney Block. 13 - 17
Q3:
7:13 Haley Jones missed Jumper. 39 - 43
7:13 Bendu Yeaney Block. 39 - 43
7:13 Bendu Yeaney Defensive Rebound. 39 - 43
6:59 Cate Reese made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Shaina Pellington. 42 - 43
I mostly recall Sam Thomas guarding whoever initiated the offense, and since Jones often brings up the ball and settles in at the top of the key, I think Thomas was effective at picking her pocket several times early. But in keeping Jones from doing what she does best, i.e. moving from key through the lane and to the basket, I mostly remember Yeaney bodying her really effectively the entire way down the lane. At one point the commentators even noted that with Jones's height advantage, she should do better to extend over Yeaney, who was not giving an inch.

We look like a top 25 team in almost every area but some of our inbounding this season feels like a HS JV squad. I'm actually more sanguine than most here about Jones's turnovers that result from overly ambitious entry passes, because they often work and when they do, they're great at juicing our offense. But the inbounding turnovers are just inexplicable unforced errors.
ros gold-onwude is usually enthusiastic about stanford. one exception came several years ago when she commented, shaking her head side to side, something like, "always the same old, predictable box formation on the inbounds pass. tara never tries anything different."
I'm pretty sure 2006alum is referring to inbounding in the backcourt against pressure. The box formation must have been referring to inbounding in the frontcourt, where that's often (though not always!) where Stanford starts.
Hmm, or do we start in a much more spread out box to inbound against backcourt pressure? Maybe, I haven't really looked at where all five players are then.
Correct. I mean, we could
also definitely improve our frontcourt inbounding, but it's the backcourt and midcourt inbounding that just kills us sometimes. There was a truly absurd sequence midway through 2Q where Jones inbounded by tossing it to no one at all (I think intended for Lacie, but not even close). Then, next inbound, Jones missed a wide open Lacie standing right in front of her and instead opted to toss it into the corner, which resulted in an immediate trap. That's when Tara yanked Jones. It was then that the announcers talked about how we struggle with the press right as JVG said "hold my beer" and cautioned Barnes to reconsider the press. But it was like the laugh-o-lympics out there until JVG came to the rescue:
7:53 Haley Jones Turnover. 20 - 21
7:52 Madison Conner made Jumper. Assisted by Sam Thomas. 22 - 21
7:44 Haley Jones Turnover. 22 - 21
7:38 Shaina Pellington made Jumper. 24 - 21 [nearly 10 seconds wasted getting the ball up to the halfcourt]
7:22 Jana Van Gytenbeek made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Anna Wilson. 24 - 24
