Stanford fan since the 1980s, enjoyed the glory years with the Rose Bowl times. Lots of fantastic memories and tailgaters.
I have to say that Stanford needs to think about their students lives, not chasing cash, doled out by media companies. If the Big Ten calls, I say, hang up. If you need to have football, become a mid major centered on the West Coast.
Of course, there will be massive restructuring of athletics at Stanford, but they will survive it. When the shit hits the fan with the TV networks in a couple of years, you will have maintained your dignity and treated your students well. Stanford, and Cal for that matter don’t need football. A lot of these other programs making the jump need football to feel respectable.
I think it’s time for Stanford to make a stand on this position, maintain their independence from the media conglomerates. Decisions made for money only never work out. Stanford is a world class academic institution first. Don’t let the tail wag the dog any more. If you need professional football, the Niners aren’t moving anywhere!
