Wow, a brobdingnagian win. The Card battled all the way, great D on Pili

Kiki's final shot was after the shot clock went zero, right. Lucky we got the last 2 FT shots.
What a win!
Tremendous character displayed
Btw I think maybe Brink got a slight block on that last Hail Mary Utah shot though not sure she’ll get credit for it
I didn’t see a clear look
And Kiki stepped up Huuuge

The refs did almost everything they could to cause UT to win this game. The jump ball call was particularly egregious.

Stanford gets its fifth Quad 1 win and gets revenge for the loss in Salt Lake City last season. And what a performance from Kiki: 25 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block and 2 steals. Really key given Utah had slowed Cam. Go Card!

We lost the 3rd and 4th quarters, but still won this game by 2. We held one of the highest scoring teams in the nation to 64 points.
The announcers ended their broadcast by stating that Kiki fouled Pili on that last drive to the hoop. It was called a tie up jump ball.
I thiink Cam got a piece of that final 3 pt attempt at the end of the game.

Wow, what a relief to get at least one win on this incredibly difficult road trip. The bad officiating continues, and these officials were not even among the worst. One can only hope that the bad calls even out over the course of the game, but we benefited from two bad calls and Utah benefited from one bad call in the last couple of minutes, so I see how the Utah fans feel robbed.
Overall:
1) Altitude matters. Our players were mouth breathing even in the first half, and they started missing short a lot in the second half. We shot 60% in the first half, and 30% in the second.
2) Utah's defense is surprisingly effective. Defense has not been their calling card but they made the second half a struggle for us. And that was the half when we had Brink for most of her minutes, so Utah was doing something right. There were times the offense went stagnant. Tara called a time out on one of those stagnant possessions--a good time out. She saw it too, of course.
3) How many times have we won games in which we gave up 13 three pointers?
4) Jump's defense was awesome. She held McQueen to 3 points, and those not until deep into the second half.
5) Holding Pili to 5/18 was terrific. Quite astounding, really, given that the likes of South Carolina gave her 37 points.
6) One of Iriafen's best games. Not only 25 points but 16 rebounds.
7) Lepolo with 7 assists to 3 turnovers, and she made her only trey. Wish she had made both her free throws at the end.
8) Bosgana with 16 minutes. Demetre with 17. Agara with 14. Ogden did not play--I wonder if she is ok.
9) We shot 45% and held the vaunted Utah offense to 39%. We were 6/12 from three point range, they were 13/32. More than half their shots were from beyond the arc.
10) While turnovers were almost even, Utah had a LOT more points off of turnovers. Ours seemed to be worse turnovers than theirs.
11) It was very striking to see the number of jumpshots that Brink and Iriafen were taking, and sometimes making. This was a deliberate strategy--I know Tara does not like mid range jumpers as a matter of analytics, but she must have known that the jump shots were going to be needed against the Utah style of defense.
Our team showed some composure under difficult circumstances tonight--it did oh so much better than in a similar situation against Gonzaga. All in all, I am delighted to get any kind of a win on this trip. Colorado will be tougher yet.

Great summary. However Jump on McQueen and Jump was really great on D
No these refs weren’t even close to average

One thing that surprised me was seeing us play so much slowdown on offense. Very often Lepolo would dribble out 10 seconds or more of the shot clock before looking to initiate the offense with a pass or drive. I suppose it was a strategy to limit Utah's possessions. It's just so unusual for a Stanford team other than when solidly ahead in the last minute or two.

Bad officiating affects both teams. Pili should not be complaining, she got away with a lot of non-called fouls. The officials and the Utes tried their best to keep Cam on the bench. Kiki stepped up and foiled their plan.
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

Quickest jump balls I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen some quick ones but usually no more than one per game—this time there were a bunch called IMMEDIATELY after we took possession. Fortunately Utah was on the receiving end of some bad jump ball calls (the last one) and one missed shot clock violation as well. Although, we didn’t score on our missed shot-clock violation like they did…

So I watched the first half, went to the Nuggets game and the watched the second half.
Related aside - if you live in an NBA city and haven’t seen the Joker live - just go. He is amazing to watch live and another triple double tonight.
Anyway, it is a remarkable contrast - 2 offensive fouls all game. One offensive rebounding foul and one blatant charge. 5-6 plays worse then Kiki’s offensive foul, none called. No moving screen calls despite virtually every screen being - well - moving.
And it totally opens up the game. Players get open. Joker can actually maneuver in the post. The one flop got no call and then a T when he complained. Zion can drive. Of course NBA level shooting matters too., but man it is a welcome change from the PACs typical women’s defensive death struggles.
Cam at this point is terrified to move towards the hoop. Almost all of her second half shots were straight up or moving away from the hoop. Ridiculous. Net result today is the stars on each team combined for 9-31 from the field - just dreadful stuff.
Still a gutty win today under challenging circumstances. Go team.

Might have been a couple things going on here. First, Utah obviously works a lot on taking charges. I think Jenna Johnson attempted around 6 just herself. Cam and Kiki could go around the Utah players if there was room, but any attempt at a power move would result in a flop by Utah (and a pretty decent chance they'd call a foul on Cam/Kiki). I bet Tara told them to just shoot the mid range because of that and...Second, it's an effective strategy to just get the ball up on the backboard when you have such a rebounding advantage. A miss is almost like a pass.

It's one thing to take a charge, and another to flop. Wash did the same thing with good results. Hope to God it isn't like this the rest of the season. If Cam ever thought of staying another year to enjoy her NIL, these calls would put a quick end to it.

I disagree if you are asserting that Iriafen didn't have her hand on the ball when a held ball was called at Q4 04.4. It is in the video from the end line. This held ball actually fits the rule (below). It was called by the ref (Michol Murray) on the bench side of the court who would have a view of it.
![[Image: Stanford-Utah-20240112-Q404-4.jpg]](https://i.ibb.co/x1vNPSF/Stanford-Utah-20240112-Q404-4.jpg)
Note the shoulder into Iriafen's chest.
You missed another officiating favor to Utah at the end of the game. With 1.9 seconds on the clock, Utah throws the ball in, Iriafen intercepts it over her head (ie, higher than 6'3") and blocks it out of bounds, but only 0.3 goes off the clock. The clock starts when Iriafen touches the ball and ends when the ref blows the whistle, which is supposed to be when the ball touches something out of bounds, usually the ground. Assume 0.3 seconds is right. On earth, the ball will fall 1.5 feet. Who touched it 4.75 feet above the floor??? If it falls 6 feet, it will take 0.6 seconds.
(Too bad Iriafen didn't just knock it 16 feet up as time would expire before it got into someone's hands (1 second up, 1 second down).) [Indeed, there is a rule(!) that indicates that (in the last minute) the minimum the clock can advance when the ball is legally touched inbounds is 0.3 seconds!]
To the quality of the video in my replay, it appears there was a double dribble by Pili with 7.0 seconds on the clock as she spins and switches from dribbling with the left hand to dribbling with the right hand. It appears she has both hands on the ball as she spins. I would defer to a better capture than what Sling presents.
At Q4 4:10, Jump's arm gets fouled on a shot but no call. (The hand on her arm is visible just before the release.)
At Q4 5:07, if that wasn't a held ball, then why wasn't it a double dribble?
At Q4 9:12, Utah #3 grabs and pulls Harriel's right arm back by 8" with 2 hands because she was beat on a screen. Harriel puts up an awkward left handed shot, but Murray doesn't call the obvious foul(?!) Even on a playground, that's a foul.

Earlier in the game, I don't understand why the refs didn't call a charge on Pili at Q2 7:21. She just bowled over Iriafen.
etc. etc.
As for Brink's second foul call (Q1 1:11), I see no rule that makes that illegal. The second closest is approaching from behind (10.2.6), but the closest is (10.2.2) "incidental contact of two players in equally favorable position to perform normal defensive or offensive movement, should be permitted though the contact may be severe". Murray called the foul against Utah. Some other ref must have overruled her. It should have been waved off, not reversed.
(Regarding Iriafen's position on the last Utah FG of Q1. The restricted area is ONLY under the "basket" not under the backboard. "Under the basket" is defined as from the front and side of the ring to the front of the backboard." So, basically, under the rim (or straddling it))
It felt to me that most of the major bad calls were made by Tyler Trimble (the male official) that Tara was talking to before the game. That early interaction left me puzzled. It seemed to start friendly, but at the end Tara looked clearly upset. Does anyone read lips?
An obvious error by him was his call of a held ball. Here are some rules:
Quote:Art. 2. A held ball occurs when an opponent places their hand(s):
a. So firmly on the ball that control cannot be obtained without undue roughness
--
Art. 2. It shall be legal for a defender to accidentally hit the hand of a ball-
handler when reaching to block or slap the ball when there is player control with
that player’s hand in contact with the ball and when that player is:
a. A dribbler;
b. Attempting a try for field goal; or
c. Holding the ball.
--
Art. 11. A dribbler shall neither charge into nor contact an opponent in the
dribbler’s path, nor attempt to dribble between two opponents or between an
opponent and a boundary, unless the space is sufficient to provide a reasonable
chance for the dribbler to pass through without contact.

On the blocked inbounds, the pass was going to Pili on the far side of the bucket in a good position for a two.
By the way, on the final shot, Pili was looking to pass to the near corner, but Jump was on the player there.
Brink's presence must have influenced the shot, if she didn't touch it. The consecutive (before, after) frames I have don't clearly show she touched it (but she's close), but it looks to me like the ball has a bit of a sideways spin which a shooter like Pili wouldn't do. So I believe she got a fingernail on it.
Stanford had a number of plays with players standing around at the end. Exhaustion impacting their thinking? I usually appreciate Lepolo, but she didn't dribble away from the defense when she had a chance.
Some day, when the clock is down to under 4 seconds, I'd like to see a player on the team with the lead just roll the ball toward the far end line. The coach might die of a heart attack, but it would take about 5 seconds for the ball to get out of bounds. The defenders would not expect it and would not likely catch up to it (and even if they did, they'd take at least a second to pick it up and shoot). The clock won't stop until it is out of bounds or an offensive player touches it in the back court. But, if you're down to 2 seconds and have a tall roof, toss it up.
Iriafen had a great offensive game. But the players she was supposed to be guarding got really good looks.
Bosgana should have been credited with a block at Q1 4:49.

The bad officiating continues, and these officials were not even among the worst. One can only hope that the bad calls even out over the course of the game, but we benefited from two bad calls and Utah benefited from one bad call in the last couple of minutes, so I see how the Utah fans feel robbed.
I disagree if you are asserting that Iriafen didn't have her hand on the ball when a held ball was called at Q4 04.4. It is in the video from the end line. This held ball actually fits the rule (below). It was called by the ref (Michol Murray) on the bench side of the court who would have a view of it.
