(2). A while back in some other post-thread BostonCard described that (I am paraphrasing here) that "50 million dollars a year" was an almost minuscule percentage of Stanfords overall Operating Budget & Endowments, & that the amount of the 'Athletic Dept budget' was almost not important enough to be listed as a line-item in the Overall Stanford University Budget/Asset Ledgers; I apologize Boston Card if I am misrepresenting what you may have said in an earlier post ..& please correct me, as I dont mean to.
That is correct as far as I can tell; when I looked at the annual report, the athletics budget (and revenue) are small enough not to merit their own line item.
So, yes, Stanford could afford $10 million a year salary for a star AD. But that’s not how this works. There’s a lot that Stanford *could* afford because it is small potatoes compared to its overall budget, but won’t do, because cumulatively all these things would be substantial and even Stanford doesn’t have the budget to throw money at every stakeholder’s vanity. Grad students are about to strike; Stanford could afford their demands. Stanford could acquire the Notre Dame campus. Stanford could do a lot of things. But generally, it is unrealistic to think that it will, barring someone or a group of people cutting Stanford a check specifically to do it.
On a separate issue, I don’t think throwing money at the problem is a viable solution. Stanford already has one of the largest athletic departments in the country. It already heavily subsidizes the department (all the more so since the demise of the PAC-12). Stanford needs to figure out its strategic direction first, needs to plot a path towards long-term sustainability that won’t depend on whether the University President is a sports fan or indifferent to athletics, and plot a path to get there. Throwing money at a splashy AD hire won’t get us there.
