I actually don't care that much for two reasons. First, under President Levin's leadership I am more confident about the university's focus on big-time athletics than I have been in quite some time and think he and the provost can be more trusted to get this right than most recent predecessors. Second, the biggest jobs in our athletic department are Andrew Luck's, the football coach job he will have to fill, and the men's basketball job that appears to be in great hands. Realize that may be a minority viewpoint on here but just for what it's worth the football search is a much bigger deal to me.
IMO one obstacle to hiring any coach will be uncertainty about the structure of Stanford's athletic department. It must be said there are quite a few coaches in the 50+ age group that won't be at all wild about reporting to Andrew Luck. While he is an icon at Stanford and has generally shown himself to be smart, he hasn't had anything like the GM job before. His lack of experience may turn off many of those more "mature" coaches. Realistically speaking, AL may not actually turn out to be good at being a GM. He also may be good at it but decide he doesn't like it. No guarantee that if AL leaves the next GM will get the same powers AL currently holds because he may not be held in the regard AL currently is. Then what?
There is also a risk that when the new AD is hired the reporting lines and responsibilities will be altered. Maybe AL ends up reporting to the AD. All kinds of things could happen since we clearly have to eventually hire a new AD. We will be asking a lot of any coach that comes to Stanford. He will already have plenty of uncertainty to deal with. Having an unknown "wild card" there doesn't help.
