In terms of Boise, I thought the issue was that the school was thinking of offering another TE but were evaluating between several. No matter; Washington State and Missouri know offense, and the latter in particular know TEs. I'm not bothered by the offer list at all.

It has nothing to do with Texas, which in recruiting has compiled a track record against Stanford in recruiting.  Maybe if Cotton had chosen Texas over Stanford  or  Stanford over Texas your jibe would be relevant,  but that's completely different from whether one particular recruit was offered by one school and not another logical one.  It's just a mildly interesting question,  not a who-was-really-behind-the-Kennedy-assassination theory.  I think there are dozens of good answers or explanations,  but it is still interesting.

First thing I noticed was there were no Texas recruiters in the stands.    Second thing: wondering is how Cotton's team managed to line up a whole bunch of 5th grade opponents week after week.  Both of Columbia HS's  WRs  looked like they were visiting Lilliput.  The third thing I noticed was his QB was really good at threading the ball between defenders.  Threw a lot of timing, relatively high-risk plays across the middle and they ended up as completions.  Also,  threw a lot of balls where only Cotton could have gotten them.

I can also see why many college staffs would evaluate him as a WR.  He lined up there and was not used in a classic TE formation.  If some other coaches just pigeon-holed him as a WR  he would be evaluated against a larger population of fast, pass catching recruits.  I don't think Stanford owns the patent on using TEs extensively or creatively,  but our staff does have first hand knowledge of what they can do with tall, fast TE raw material and didn't have to adjust thinking about a position change.

Things I liked:  Cotton also played defense.  Not sure if stand-up DE or OLB,  but collapsed some plays on the corner taking on blockers.  Midget blockers,  but those guys are rough once they get into your legs.  Says to me Cotton's tough and loves the game.  Gonna need that attitude as a true TE w/ blocking responsibilities.    Also shows he's quick,  not just top end speed,  although watching him use his long legs vs. shorter, high-rev guys at full speed was fun, too.

Texas is a very strange place.  The vast majority of people there actually think that UT is the academic equal of Harvard or Stanford.  And going to college out of state is viewed the way people in other states would view going to college in a foreign country.  Sure, there are kids who want to go out of state, but they're rare and unusual.

I wouldn't say rare or unusual.  Texas is definitely marketed as a top-tier public university (it pretty much is), but your usual crop of high-achievers knows that the Ivies, Stanford, Rice, USB, etc. all exist.  The football players are aware of the $EC, Pac-12, etc. schools as well.

Other than a Malcolm Gladwellian analysis that takes into consideration the cost of in state tuition, I don't think anyone, in Texas or otherwise, thinks they can make an argument for the superiority or a UT undergraduate education over Stanford.

I think the only major that de facto requires 5 yrs to graduate is architecture.  Everything else seems to be doable in 4 yrs unless you're trying some Plan II honors + other non-liberal arts amalgam of majors.
