Now an outsider team like #15 Texas A&M walks in and beats #1 Alabama at home, and Bama only falls to #4 and A&M gets elevated to #8 because they must be that good to beat the almighty Saban. And Johnny Mansiell is automatically a Voldemort contender (in one of the weakest Voldemort races ever) because did you see what he did against Bama? So all the 1 and 2 loss SEC teams are packed at the top of the polls, because all their losses are "quality losses."Â
Bama gets incredible kudos this year for winning in a nailbiter against LSU in Death Valley at night, the "most intimidating environment ever". But LSU nearly lost to Ole Miss in that same environment. How do we really know how good any of these teams really are?Â
This eyeball test business is terrible. I can't wait until they at least get a 4 team playoff. Do I know that we would beat a Bama? No, but I sure would like to find out. Nobody gave us a shot at Oregon. Prove it on the field.Â

I just can't get particularly excited about how our performance impacts the SEC.
If we take care of business, one of these days we will meet one of their top teams on the field. That will be our opportunity to prove they are overrated.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I realize I sounded kind of bitter in my SEC rant, but trust me, this is not spoiling anything about this weekend's events so far (the topper would be Luck beating the Patriots and men's bball beating Belmont). I am giddy like a schoolgirl at a Bieber concert about this win. And if we take care of business against UCLA next week, our seniors are going to have to wash their "My Last Walk" shirts when we host the Pac-12 title game. You tell me when I've ever been this excited about laundry on a weekend! :D

Just watched the replay on slo-mo, looks like Hogan actually is the player who got the ball back on that fumble. Great hustle from him.

Wilkes does sort of bat it away from the Oregon player, but Hogan is the player who charges in and lands on the ball while it's still free. Wouldn't be surprised if Wilkes ended up wresting it out from under him in the scrum after though.

Jeff - I would enjoy hearing your experience as a visiting fan in Autzen. Any pre-game or post-game anecdotes of worthy note? How did the Oregon fans react?
I imagine they had to provide a police escort to get the replay crew out of there. How dare they overturn the fumbled punt return and Ertz TD?

Obviously there were a lot of boos after the call on the Ertz TD was overturned. The replay was only shown once in the stadium and a lot of the Oregon fans around me admitted that it looked like a catch. We were not quite a gracious about the phantom pass interefence call on Oregon's last posession!
As I pointed out in a post prior to the game, they haven't had any home games that have been remotely close this year, although plenty of heroics in previous seasons. I was hoping that the lack of experience in close games plus the subtle pressure of being #1 in the AP poll would cause them to tighten up a bit in a tight game. Impossible to know how much of an impact that had on the team itself. The fans were another story. To them, the NC game was a foregone conclusion. They seemed stunned that their team could be beaten at home, and only score 14 points, no less. Once the final field goal split the uprights a celebration ensued on the field and in the one section of Stanford fans. I noticed that most of the Oregon fans didn't leave right away, they stood around for a while in a slack-jawed stupor. Every game for them prior to this has been a fast-paced blowout party.
Every fan base of course has their share of drunk jerks and Oregon was no exception. A couple of more thoughtful fans did stop me on the way out to say it was not a fluke win, they were very complimentary of the way Stanford came in prepared to play. A good discussion with a couple of them on the shuttle bus out of the stadium and how this would put Alabama and possibly some other SEC teams right back in the hunt for the BCS chamionship.
Since I don't make it a habit of being obnoxious when in a visiting stadium I didn't get hassled too much. All in all Autzen is a great atmosphere for college football.

Some sports talk show segment tonight was taking DAT to task for not blocking Carrington on the Mariota run. I suspect the blocking skills of Oregon RBs are generally a bit lacking.
