Assuming that they haven't lowered their admissions requirements up to now, doesn't the fact that they went 12-0 this year (along with Stanford 3 year BCS run) show that you can win with high character/academic standard players?
Although it will be an interesting test to see if it's sustainable to have two programs with high admission standards have continued success in the BCS era. And here I'm taking it on faith the general sentiment that N.otre Dame is at least directionally on par with Stanford in that arena and a significant step above typical factories.
Yes, they made it to the NCG but lost badly. Badly enough that a lot of people felt ND wasn't the #2 team in the country. So I think someone looking for a reason to argue in favor of lowering standards to bridge the gap with the likes of Alabama could make a decent case. And I'm guessing Kelley has an interest in making that case. That was my point.
Personally, I agree that Stanford and ND have demonstrated you can win with a higher bar (at least in Stanford's case, significantly higher) than the NCAA minimum. And it's hard to argue that, say, Oregon has more talent than ND. So I don't buy the argument. Just speculating that Kelley may want to.
