I had the same thought. If I were opposing Special Teams coaches, I would be preaching ball hawking all day. It also seemed like Gaffney would carry the ball in one hand more than seemed wise in high traffic areas. I don't think either have fumbled yet this year, so perhaps I'm paranoid. They are both equipped with sizable "guns" to hold onto the ball.

Wasn't it also Gaffney who fumbled but the ruling was that the knee touched the ground a moment before the ball came loose (and the call looked very close, even questionable, in slo-mo)? Can't remember what game that was... ASU perhaps.

Almost every time Montgomery touches the ball I reflexively scream "PUT THE BALL AWAY" from my second deck, shady side seats. I don't think he can hear me.

Coaches preach ball security and turnovers all the time. There is no way that a coaching staff A) isn't aware of how their players carry the ball and B) isn't aware how opposing players carry the ball.Â
To me, the greater point of emphasis should be how when Montgomery was tackled on his 66 yard KOR, he was able to protect the ball from a UW defender who was trying to chop it out from behind.Â
Also in that blog, the writer says Utah's defense matches up well with Stanford's run game. I'll believe that when I see it. Because if they crowd the line and blitz a lot, like they did against UCLA, and can't make Hogan uncomfortable with only 4 pass rushers, Stanford will make them pay.
The thing that was so effective about UW's defense was they positioned their Linebackers three yards behind the DL, and then on downs they expected runs, they brought a Safety into the box, so they had 8 against 7 practically every time Stanford ran the ball. Their safeties made quite a few one-on-one tackles on Stanford RBs, including off a few outside run blitzes where the unaccounted for tackler made the stop. Washington tried to play it both ways as much as they could on every play, with basic defense - bring a Safety down when they expected run, and keep two back when they expected pass, and rarely bring any more than 4 rushers. Stanford pretty much ran when they expected run and passed when they expected pass. Would have been nice to see some power runs on 3rd and 7 to see how Stanford would have fared with a hat on a hat up front.

If you watch that play again, you will see that the Washington defender missed his target on that chop. If he had been more accurate, there is a very good chance that the ball would have come out.

This is critical. There were only a tiny number of plays when they "guessed" wrong. Whatever we were doing to deceive them was not working. Even a very mediocre or inferior defense (and that is not Washington) can be effective if they successfully predict whether it will be run or pass all the time. And we have to know that Utah will have studied what Washington did carefully.
